Job's Tears, also known as adlay and coix, is a member of the grass family and popular in Asian cultures as a food source and for making jewelry. But the plant has also been used for centuries in folk medicine to treat dozens of conditions from arthritis to smallpox. Scientific research investigating Job's Tears hasn't been conducted much outside China and Korea, but results from those studies are discovering properties in the plant that may have potent health benefits.


Cholesterol Diabetic mice were fed the seeds from Job's Tears plants along with a high-cholesterol diet for four weeks in a study published in the "International Journal for Vitamin and Nutrition Research" in September 2006. Compared to a control group, the seed-eating mice had significantly reduced levels of total cholesterol and harmful low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, cholesterol.


Weight Loss Obese mice were injected with extracts from Job's Tears for four weeks in research published in 2004 in the journal "Life Sciences." Compared to a control group, the mice fed the extracts had reduced body weights, food intake, fat size, adipose fat tissue mass and levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.Endocrine Disorders Job's Tears extracts are used to treat endocrine disorders due to the plant's ability to decrease hormones like progesterone and testosterone.


In the December 2000 issue of the "Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine," painful menstrual symptoms were reduced 90 percent, which was a much better result than a control group treated with prescription medications. Gastrointestinal Benefits Job's Tears may also have protective benefits for the gastrointestinal system. A June 2011 study in the "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry" found that Job's Tears seeds inhibited gastric cancer cells in vitro and were also able to decrease stomach ulcers in mice.

Too chicken to retire



Does the very idea of retirement terrify you? Do you worry that something catastrophic could happen and you'll find yourself living in a cardboard box? I was thinking about this statistic Monday night when my husband and I were talking for the umpteenth time about when we're really going to retire. He's an accountant who works for an insurance company and spends all of his days looking at the cost of disaster. Believe me, it skews his outlook, and because I listen to him, it affects mine, as well.


After years together, neither of us is eager to take a whole lot of risk -- financial or otherwise. One of the results has been that whenever we look at his detailed budget and family financial plan, it never seems like it is enough for us to hang up our work boots and relax.


What will happen if the economy goes south and takes our investments with it? Will our adult children stumble and really need us to help out? Could the house that we built on the lake flood and be damaged beyond what flood insurance would cover? What would happen if one of us came down with a really debilitating illness?


Avoiding these kinds of exigencies is what retirement planning is all about, but even the most carefully laid plans can go awry. YMCA Camp Santa Maria



A job at an overnight camp can have a lasting effect on your life. Our goal at YMCA Camp Santa Maria is to have the best trained camp staff in the country. We are a small camp serving up to 125 campers a session with 35 staff. The intimate size of this camp combined with a focus on teaching campers about the natural world around them and skills for life while role-modeling the social skills of kindness, patience, enthusiasm and strength. Counselors make themselves at home in cabins nestled among the pine and aspen trees. Cabins are dormitory style with a centrally located bath house. Cabin group will include your Co-Counselor and up to 12 campers. Administrative and support staff live in a communal staff housing may be asked to cover cabins occasionally overnight. Healthy, kid-friendly meals are served family style in the dining hall. Afternoon snacks are available through your camp store account.


During your time off: Laundry facilities are available at camp (suds provided) at no cost and wireless internet and phones are available.

Location, location, location! While our focus is on youth development, it doesn’t hurt that we’re surrounded by the scenic Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Not a bad place to play and explore during the summer!


If you can get yourself to Denver, we’ll take care of the rest! Most of our staff members come from outside of Colorado and fly in to Denver International Airport. We would be happy to pick you up at the airport. Or, like many of our staff members, you can make a road trip of it. Either way, YMCA Camp Santa Maria is easy to get to. We’re located about 45 minutes west of Denver on U.S. Highway 285.


Coming to camp but won’t have a car for the summer? No problem. One of the great things about Camp Santa Maria is that we are a close community of friendly people and enjoy being together. Many staff members do bring cars and on days off our staff members plan outings together to relax, play and explore Colorado in the summertime.


The opportunities for fun while you are on staff at YMCA Camp Santa Maria are boundless. We will hike, climb, backpack, mountain bike, skateboard, kayak, raft, shoot archery, fish, horseback ride, create art and swim, among many, many other great activities. Jobs in House nursing & insurance



We all know that some jobs are better than others for teleworking than others. Can an emergency room nurse call it in right? But that doesn't mean that all nursing jobs are not well good opportunities. In fact, much work there at home opportunities for nurses.


On the other hand, the insurance industry is a field where telework seems an obvious fit. Calculation of numbers jobs - as Actuaries and claims adjusters - typically can do from home.


But more than that, health insurance companies often hire nurses. Types of work at home to nurse my vary from Instructor of Health Medical Center named in charge of the case. In fact, work at home jobs in insurance have grown in recent years as the insurance companies, especially large ones, have gotten so accustomed to one template of teleworking offering many positions home sales, IT, and customer service. And many of the big insurance companies who hire nurse are on my list of top teleworking.
