Hospitality apprenticeship rates continue to rise



People 1st has announced that the number of people who do apprenticeships in hospitality and catering has more than doubled in the past four years and completion rates improved by almost 10 percent.

The latest figures indicate that more than 35,000 people began an apprenticeship in 2011-2012, compared with just 14,890 in 2007-2008, while in the last three years, completion rates have increased to 74 percent.


These impressive enhancements follow a series of awareness-raising initiatives by people 1st the benefits of apprenticeship, as well as to encourage more people and businesses to engage with them.


Brian Wisdom, CEO of people 1st, said that this was a fantastic result for an industry that traditionally has a high staff turnover rate.


"The industry should be extremely proud of the impressive gains made as the number of apprenticeship training undertaken and the huge improvement in the completion rates. While us industries have continued to improve, the completion rates across the rest of the economy have remained static.


"This is important because training play a vital role in career paths, ensuring that newcomers develop skills to equip with a career in the industry."


People 1st started the first strategy of apprenticeship in 2009 and since then has worked with employers, educators and educational institutions to promote apprenticeship, as well as to ensure that the skills students acquire during their apprenticeship to meet employers ' needs.

People 1st also played an important role representing employers hosting in Government and to ensure that policy makers are aware of the contribution the industry makes to the overall economy.


"We've worked with employers throughout the industry for identifying skill gaps and roles that are difficult to fill, and have worked with partners to create programs such as hosting Guild Apprenticeship Awards recognise outstanding achievement among the trainees in the hospitality industry," said Brian.


"I have also represented the industry during the recent review of Richard in the future apprenticeship and cooperate with the National Apprenticeship Service for a range of other initiatives."


More recently people 1st has worked with Guild hosting for the action now! campaign, which aims to promote apprenticeship and increase engagement between students, employers and providers through five simple steps.


Brian said that the next step for people 1 was to work with the Guild hosting and employers to develop an industrial partnership for the visitor and tourism economy, which will provide a way for employers to offer real training including apprenticeships – that will benefit their businesses in a changing operating environment.


"I have submitted an initial offer to the Government to establish this partnership and always seek more support from employers who want to participate.


"It provides a new platform for employers and providers to take a more active role in the delivery of apprenticeship is just one of the goals that this new partnership will deliver."

This marked the eighth year in which Perry Resources has recognized an outstanding local student with a scholarship.  Michelle O’Donnell, human resources administrator for Harbor Linen in Gibbsboro, N.J., was the sole judge for this year’s scholarship.

Royal British Legion Industries have recently launched a ‘civilian and families’ version of their acclaimed LifeWorks Outplacement course.

LifeWorks was launched in 2011 and since then over 250 grant-funded delegates have attended the intensive 5 day residential course at RBLI’s centre in Aylesford, Kent.


LifeWorks was developed as a specialist Outplacement programme aimed at ex-Armed Forces personnel in pursuit of their first or subsequent civilian job. Attended by all ranks from all three services, from Able Seamen to Brigadiers, LifeWorks has earned universal praise for its success.


Even if delegates are on their second or later civilian job, but are now needing help in a career change, LifeWorks can be grant funded so is free for Veteran delegates who attend. Even delegates who only served for a minimal time can qualify.

Positive signs for travel industry as salaries rise again



After last month’s slight fall, travel job salaries rebounded strongly in April to rise by 1.44 per cent in the month, according to the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Recruitment Consultancy (http://www.candm.co.uk/) and Chisholm & Moore Executive Recruitment (http://www.chisholmandmoore.co.uk/).


The figures, which were drawn from all new vacancies registered at the companies in the month, marked a recovery after the 1.93 per cent fall seen in March. The rise means that April’s figure of £27,172 is just £140 short of the £27,312 total seen in February 2013, which marked the index’s highest average since its records began in 2010.


The annual change in travel job salaries was even more pronounced with a 14.97 per cent rise, although the three-month average figures (which commonly produce a more reliable indicator of recent trends) showed gentler rises of 0.34 per cent in the month and 8.06 per cent in the year.


Commenting on the figures, Barbara Kolosinska, sales director at C&M Recruitment Consultancy, said: “This can only be seen as great news for travel employees. While there may not be as many jobs available now as before the recession, the positions that are vacant are offering a far improved salary. Anyone who manages to secure a new travel job in the near future should reap the benefits of the more generous salaries currently being provided by travel companies.”


More candidates, more jobs


In further positive news for the travel industry, the number of new vacancies increased in April by a huge 19.4 per cent, although this was still down annually, while the number of new candidates registering their interest in travel jobs rose by 3.35 per cent to reach its highest level in over a year.


“April’s rise in both new vacancies and new candidates can only be seen as a positive indicator for the travel industry. It still remains too early to state that the sector has recovered from the economic problems of recent years, but all signs point to the industry being on the right track,” said Ms Kolosinska.


All figures are drawn from the salaries of the month’s new vacancies advertised with C&M Recruitment Consultancy and Chisholm & Moore Executive Recruitment.

Travel wages dip for the summer




AVG. wages for jobs travel took a slight dip in June, fell by 2.82 percent, compared with may, according to the last salary index travel from C & M hiring of consultants (http://www.candm.co.uk/) and Chisholm executive recruiting (http://www.chisholmandmoore.co.uk/) & Moore.


The £ 24,460 average wage is the lowest seen so far this year, but the index, which is based on all the new vacancies registered at the two companies, the month, also showed that wages increased slightly compared with June 2012, while the average of the three months also increased annually at healthy 4.81 percent.


Analyzing the figures, Barbara Kolosinska, sales manager at C M recruitment consultants & said: "despite the monthly dip in June, travel agent salary still remained until the year-on-year and is above the average seen in 2012.


"The month also saw a 15 percent annual increase in new jobs posted by C M recruitment consultants and & Chisholm & Moore, suggesting that the coming months could be a busy period for recruitment travel market."


Sunbathing takes priority for job seekers for June


The start of summer of UK it seems to affect the number of new candidates registering with the two companies in June as the month saw a significant decline in applicants compared with may. However, June's figure was still up by around one third compared with the same month in 2012, while it is also worth remembering that all of May was the highest rate for 14 months.


MS Kolosinska commented: "with the Sun coming out so rare in the United Kingdom, it is understandable that people's attention will be temporarily removed from the job search! We can actually see this trend most years-summer (along with, inevitably, December) is traditionally the quietest in terms of new applicants.


"However, with many new jobs in our books, in recent weeks, expect to see many new candidates that appear throughout the rest of the summer."

From the manual: The purpose of this manual is to orient soldiers to the functions and descriptions of hand grenades and ground pyrotechnic signals. It provides a reference for the identification and capabilities of various hand grenades and pyrotechnic signals. It also provides a guide for the proper handling and throwing of hand grenades, suggests methods and techniques for the tactical employment of hand grenades, and provides a guide for commanders conducting hand grenade training. This manual provides information and guidance for operating, using, and training with hand grenades.


It is intended for two user groups: (1) training centers responsible for introducing and training soldiers to a basic knowledge level and (2) field units, officers, and noncommissioned officers responsible for sustaining basic knowledge level skills and advancing soldier skills in the employment of the hand grenades on the battlefield. The development of new hand grenades and improvement of existing hand grenades has resulted in many different grenade types within the US inventory.


While only a limited number of grenade types are in production today for US Armed Forces, the majority of all hand grenades produced are used by either the armed forces of our allies or countries to which we occasionally provide military assistance. State of the Nation 2013 finds businesses should retain and train for future success



New research has shown that customer service and management and leadership skills will play a significant role in the hospitality and tourism sector as customer expectations increase and social media use continues to rise.

People 1st’s 2013 State of the Nation research report surveyed more than 2,000 employers from across the hospitality and tourism sector to analyse current labour market trends, skills, and education and training needs.


With employers showing a general optimism about the future, the report offers insights into areas that will influence the sector in coming years, noting that 88 percent of employers believed customer service skills would grow in importance in the next three to five years.


The report also shows that employers believe management and leadership skills (69 percent), the need to address sustainability issues (58 percent), and effective use of social media (48 percent) will have significant influence on the sector in the future.


Brian Wisdom, chief executive of People 1st, said that the sector will face significant pressure in the future as the skills needs predicted to grow are already in short supply.


“Our employers are already saying that many of their staff lack the necessary customer service and management and leadership skills, so as the need for these particular skills grows, the situation could definitely get a lot worse,” said Brian.


“A lot of effort has gone into attracting people into the industry, but this shows that what we really need to do is place much more emphasis on making sure that the staff we already have in the industry are retained and given the training they need.


“As the economy picks up and we face recruitment competition from other industries, ensuring our staff have the right skills is going to be hugely important.”


The State of the Nation 2013 report shows that while staff turnover rates have fallen from 31 percent in 2009 to 20 percent in 2012, continuing to lose so many people from the sector is undermining the industry’s investment in training.


With 21 percent of employers reporting skill gaps, the sector’s productivity is being severely affected. The hospitality and tourism sector is highly labour intensive when compared to output, so staff skills gaps hamper its success.


The research shows that in addition to retaining staff in the hospitality and tourism workforce, providing the right training and development opportunities for individuals is also imperative.


“Our research found that only 41 percent of organisations offered training in the past 12 months, which means that there are a lot of people missing out,” said Brian.


“Of those that do offer training, most money is directed toward elementary occupations, which is carried out at the most basic level, and much of this is because of the high turnover rates we’re experiencing. It has become a vicious cycle that we need to stop.


“If only 36 percent of organisations provide training directed at addressing individual needs, we are not doing enough to develop the skills we need – either now or in the future.”


The report found that the rise of social media and technology will also play a significant role in the future of the industry, as people are making use of new media and information sources to become increasingly well informed about what is available in the market.


These changes are influencing the way customers perceive value and what they want from services, as they are able to compare information more easily and get better deals. The report shows that this is leading to an increase in competition and a real focus on the customer experience.


Other highlights from the report included:


• One in 14 people working in the UK are employed in the hospitality and tourism sector
• Employment growth in the hospitality and tourism sector (0.7 percent) is higher than the average for the economy as a whole (0.5 percent)
• A further 660,200 people will need to be recruited to 2020
• The sector contributed £40.6bn to the UK economy in 2011
• Almost half (46 percent) of hospitality and tourism businesses employ less than five people
• 57 percent of the workforce is female, but only 32 percent of sector employers have female senior managers
• 18 percent of employers with hard-to-fill vacancies believe there are insufficient numbers of people interested in doing the types of work available
• The majority of skills shortage vacancies are for elementary staff (43 percent) and skilled trade occupations (41 percent).
• 21 percent of employers report skills gaps, compared to only 13 percent in the overall economy.
• The sector spends an average of £3,625 per person on training, which is higher than the average of £3,275 across all industries.


“This latest research shows that we are in a fantastic position to have a huge impact on the UK economy in the forthcoming years, provided we are able to adapt to the needs of our customers,” said Brian.


“Naturally, we need to make sure our people have the skills to meet these customer expectations and adapt to changes in the future, but there is significant potential for us to contribute massively to the country’s continued recovery.
