New Vacancies and Candidates Both Rise, But Salaries Fall



May provided mixed results for travel recruitment, but both the number of new job vacancies and new candidates increased impressively in the month, according to the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Recruitment Consultancy (http://www.candm.co.uk/) and Chisholm & Moore Executive Recruitment (http://www.chisholmandmoore.co.uk/), which is based on all new vacancies registered at the companies.


In fact, May marked the highest number of new registrations from candidates for over a year (since March 2012) and was around a third higher than the 2012 average, while the number of new travel vacancies stood at its highest level since last September and was also significantly above the average figure seen in recent months.


Commenting on the figures, Barbara Kolosinska, sales director at C&M Recruitment Consultancy, said: “It’s great to see such a large rise in the number of candidates registering for travel vacancies in May, and it’s even more encouraging to see so many travel companies looking to recruit more staff.


“The second half of the year is typically busier for the travel recruitment industry, so it’s a fantastic sign to see so much activity in the early summer.”


Travel salaries experience first real dip of 2013


With a 7.36 per cent monthly fall, May saw the first significant dip in salaries this year. However, this decrease can largely be attributed to a monthly fall in the wage of higher-salaried executive jobs, which can be notably more volatile than other travel positions.


While May is the first month this year to see an annual fall in new travel job salaries, the reduction of 0.40 per cent is minimal and marks a dip of just £102.


“There’s no denying that May’s figures are disappointing when compared to the past few months, but it’s worth remembering that April’s figure was at a near-record high,” said Ms Kolosinska.


“So far, average travel salaries in 2013 have been incredibly encouraging and there is no reason to think that the second half of the year should be any less impressive than the first.


All figures are drawn from the salaries of the month’s new vacancies advertised with C&M Recruitment Consultancy and Chisholm & Moore Executive Recruitment.

Start to Continues Despite Modest Monthly Dip




The average salary for a new job in the travel sector decreased by 1.93 per cent to reach £26,785 in March, but still increased annually by 1.35 per cent, the latest research from C&M Recruitment Consultancy (http://candm.co.uk/) shows.


While this is the first monthly fall of the year so far, salaries have increased strongly since last December, meaning that average wages are still significantly up compared to just a few months ago. In fact, the three-month salary average (a more reliable indicator of recent trends) shows that salaries have increased by 3.30 per cent in recent months and by 4.87 per cent since last March.


Barbara Kolosinska, sales director at C&M Recruitment Consultancy, commented: “So far this year we have seen average salaries increase strongly compared to the second half of last year and these figures should provide a boost to those looking to find a new travel role. It remains to be seen if this pace of growth will continue in the coming months, but there are small signs of increasing confidence among employers.”


But increased strongly in 2012


The figures also reveal that the average starting salary for a new job in the travel industry increased by an average of 5.12 per cent last year to reach £24,425. Although this was lower than 2011’s annual increase of 9.77 per cent, it is still above the rate of inflation and notably higher than the 0.2 per cent average increase reported by the Office for National Statistics.


Considering March 2013’s average wage was £26,785, this confirms that the starting salaries of new jobs advertised with C&M at the beginning of this year have been significantly higher than those for equivalent positions made available at the end of 2012.


“Considering the problems facing the travel industry and the general economy in 2012, it is interesting to see that average starting salaries actually increased very positively in the travel sector last year. At C&M we also saw an 11.54 per cent increase in new travel vacancies in 2012, which further backs up the theory that the industry is set to see a positive 2013,” Ms Kolosinska added.

Central Penn College graduate success rate increases



Based on the latest research graduate College Central Penn of annuals, 87.8% of the college graduates were employed in their chosen field or continuing their education within one year of graduation, 5.9 percentage rate increase from the previous year.

"I think the increase is indicative of Central Penn College's emphasis on providing a professional, career-focused education and preparing students for the experience of true labor," says the career services Director Steve Hassinger. "We believe that this report card to us; rather than report on the number of graduates who have found employment, we point back to our mission and focus on the number of graduates that actually working in their chosen field or to continue their education. "


Central Penn's mission is to provide an education that prepares graduates to gain employment or advancement in their chosen field, to continue their education and contributing members of society.


"Penn Central measure of success by the success of graduates," explains Hassinger.


The annual graduate research results were published on 3 July, recapitulation of elements of employment of 326, 343 alumni who graduated, 1 July 2011 and 30 June 2012. College career services team used different methods to gather data on employment, including: written, phone and email surveys, social networking sites, Internet searches, contact relatives, access to various other databases on Campus Faculty/staff Surveying, and contact with other graduates.


Are examples of some of the organizations where they work graduates: select Medical Corporation, Foot Locker, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, Highmark, ACTIVISM, Ahold USA, Dauphin County children's services youth & and PHEAA. 52, physical therapist Assistant (PTA) graduates, working as PTAs 71 percent in the midstate.     The Work Projects Administration (WPA) Poster Collection consists of 907 posters produced from 1936 to 1943 by various branches of the WPA. The posters were designed to publicize exhibits, community activities, theatrical productions, and health and educational programs in seventeen states and the District of Columbia, with the strongest representation from California, Illinois, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.     ESB Learning from the Neighbours



    Chairman of the Somerset Employment and Skills Board, Kath Gigg, and industry leaders from Somerset, paid a visit to Weymouth’s Budmouth College to get a first-hand look at how Somerset’s neighbouring county is preparing young people for the world of work.
    Improving education-business engagement is a key priority for the industry-led Employment and Skills Board (ESB) and the leading representatives from business and education in Somerset were keen to see how young people in Weymouth are being encouraged to prepare for employment within local businesses.

    The board members visited the Centre of Excellence for Industrial Liaison (CEIL) at Budmouth College in Dorset. The centre is based on the College site but employs non-teaching staff and provides a very different study and work environment for its young interns, who must apply to become members and take on key roles to support the smooth running of the centre.


    A number of local business sponsors have provided the funds to run the centre, whilst others make a small donation to use hot-desks and a cleverly designed nine zone development space. The young people benefit from personalised support and the opportunity to develop essential employability and job specific skills by working on tasks and projects, which are identified by business users.


    Director of the Centre, Marcel Ciantar is passionate about getting it right, both for businesses and young people.  “Our centre provides an opportunity for businesses to work alongside our students, try before they buy, and help mould the end product.”


    The ESB’s Thematic Champion for Education-Business Engagement, Patricia Marks of Somerset Business Agency (representing the Federation of Small Businesses) said, “This is a really great example of a business-focused professional development model that works.  Rather than being a ‘bolt-on’ careers activity, young people are meaningfully engaged with the centre’s business users and are able to apply their academic and vocational learning to a real work environment.”


    Patricia continued, “We hope that schools and colleges in Somerset will seriously review this model and consider becoming one of five new Centres of Excellence that could pave the way for a national roll-out.”

    Host reception at the Houses of Parliament



    Yesterday, international IT services provider FDM Group hosted its first parliamentary reception at the House of Commons to discuss what business people, media and parliamentarians can do to encourage more young people to pursue a career in technology.

    The event, entitled “delivering the technology skills for the 21st century economy” saw speeches from FDM’s CEO Rod Flavell and Barry Sheerman MP, former Chair of the Education and Skills Committee and the current Chair of the Skills Commission, and was attended by over 130 FDM staff, MPs and senior representatives from the banking and insurance industries, as well as professional bodies such as e-skills.


    According to e-skills’ Technology Insights Report, there will be a demand for over half a million IT professionals over in the next five years in the UK alone but currently Computing and ICT A-levels taken in the UK constitutes just 0.5% and 1.4% of all A-levels taken respectively, a decline of 60% since 2003.


    Addressing this worrying skills shortage, Flavell said, “We want to create an economy in technology that caters to everybody.


    “FDM is about here, it’s about tomorrow and it’s about people’s ability to get through the first two years as an FDM Consultant and to go on and make their mark in information technology, and doing it in the UK is absolutely critical.”


    During his keynote speech, Barry Sheerman MP said, “The whole world is changing and we’re not quite noticing it. Together, with the leadership of people like FDM, we are going to make this country high skilled and that is the future I want.”


    Flavell closed the speeches by awarding FDM Consultants for their hard work. Leanne Lawrence was awarded as the FDM Consultant of the Year for her success whilst placed with UBS. Lawrence also volunteers at the UBS Bridge Academy helping a number of students prepare for their GCSE Maths exams.


    The second award, FDM Female Champion of the Year, was given to Charlotte Keens, an FDM Consultant also placed with UBS. Keens regularly speaks and mentors other female FDM trainees and Consultants to guide their professional development.

    New Jersey to Host Career Open House



    Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ) is scheduled to hold a Career Open House at its Central Service Center, 201 Grove Street East, Westfield NJ on Saturday, May 18 from 10am-2pm. Eligible candidates will have the opportunity to interview for several positions.

    GSHNJ is seeking bright, energetic applicants with positive, can-do attitudes and relationship building and collaborating skills who are looking for a professional career in membership recruitment, programming, outreach, fund development, human resources and an opportunity to work with girls and volunteers.
